This is a lovely vintage paperweight dating to the 1980s.
It is a close pack paperweight - and signed in the centre with a Butterfly Cane. This is a Caithness / Whitefriars paperweight.
Whitefriars initially operated under the name of James Powell & Sons from 1834 - 1962, when it was renamed Whitefriars Glass. Sadly, in 1980 the company went out of business.
When Whitefriars was liquidated, Caithness purchased the rights to the name and produced paperweights under the Whitefriars name for a short period.
This weight has concentric rings of millefiori canes - the canes are white and cobalt blue - and they are set into a translucent purple ground.
The cane in the center shows a silhouette of a butterfly. There is a little Whitefriars monk cane and a 1985 date on the base.
It does not have a CG cane - so I am assuming that this is made by Caithness just after the transition period and that it is actually Scottish in origin.
In lovely vintage condition with no damages It is inscribed with issue numbers to the base. It is a nice large size with a diameter of 3 inches and a height of 2 1/4 inches.
